Day 2...We made it to our first day of teaching - see photos below.  We began the day with morning prayer and song with the staff (Ann Haring would have been proud).  We were then assigned our classrooms. The school services 3 main disabilities; hearing impaired, visually impaired and intellectually impaired.   We are working in the class for students with intellectual impairment...very challenging, but rewarding also!  The teachers and especially the students are very welcoming ...lots of hugs all day!

Ms. Pagano teaching - and she is never without her fanny pack!
Mrs. Castelluccio teaching
Ms. Conlon Teaching
Here is a typical classroom...not many supplies (check out the broken broomstick for a pointer)..No computers, no cleverboards or whiteboards....very little materials...there are 3 different classes in one room...a few crayons, little paper and hardly any balls to play with!!

There was a dance party at the end of the day...Mrs. Sullivan and 3S would have loved it!!  Some mighty good dancers at St. Mulumba!
These students are sending out a special hello to 2P & IC - they know the students must be missing their teachers (Ms. Pagano & Ms.Conlon)!
The reality of the area...lots of signs like this posted around the school!
We are headed off to teach afterschool activities.  We will post more tomorrow!  Miss you all!
Maria, Prue and Christine

    1. Hi First Grade!

Thank you for your message. I miss you too!!!

We are trying our best to help as much as we can but you are right, we are also learning a lot from our students. They may not have a lot of the things we have but they are happy with what they do have. Every day we are blessed to see their smiling faces and are greeted with plenty of hugs.

We can't wait to share with you all of the stories and memories.

      Love Miss Conlon.

  13. I am sure you all are having a wonderful experience. My time there has meant so much to me. Keep up the good work. Does anyone at Kalunda Ka Maria know if Fostina is still around? She was the headmaster in 2002.

    1. Fostina is still the head there..although she was on a break, she came to the school to meet us and give us a tour...she is in one of the pictures. We really enjoyed talking with her and visiting her school.
